Ocho Rios Shopping
Ocho Rios is awash in shopping centers. Some contain only duty-free shops, while others house a variety of
stores not necessarily geared to tourists. Prices are marked in either Jamaican or U.S. dollars.
(Always establish the currency up front.)
Shoppers in search of duty-free bargains on French perfume, crystal, watches, cameras and electronic equipment
should scout the centers along Main Street and DaCosta Drive.
The largest of these are:
Island Village Shopping Centre - (At the West end of town near the A3 highway),
Taj Mahal Shopping Centre - (near the cruise-ship terminal),
Ocean Village Shopping Centre - (in the center of Ocho Rios),
Pineapple Place - (just east of town) and
Coconut Grove Shopping Centre.
Ocho Rios has five outdoor crafts markets:
Ocho Rios Craft Market - off Main Street,
Olde Market Craft Shoppes - next to Seow Supermarket,
Pineapple Craft Circle - beside Pineapple Place,
Coconut Grove Craft Market - next to Coconut Grove Shopping Centre and
Fern Gully Craft Centre - at Fern Gully.
Most of the straw work, wood carvings and leather goods are of good quality, but you'll notice a sameness
in the merchandise.
Individual shops offering one-of-a-kind items include:
Disc 'N Dat Music -
Island Plaza Mall, Ocho Rios · 876-795-2775
One of the most readily identifiable traits of Jamaican culture is its music, so if you are into reggae or
just want an souvenir to commemorate your trip, Disc 'N Dat is worth while. They stock a wide variety of
reggae music from the past and present as well as a large selection of hip-hop, jazz, and rock.
Irie Ceramics - (8 mi/12 km east of Ocho Rios, just past Couples Hotel) for pottery,
Shop #2 in Soni's Centre, Ocho Rios · 876-974-9270
As one of the most recognizable names in duty-free jewelry, Mohan's has become a local establishment in
Ocho Rios and attracts customers visiting from all over the world. The store's most appealing offering is
Tanzanite, a unique local gem that was just discovered in the 1960s. Shoppers can get a customized
Tanzanite piece or choose from a variety of shapes already precut and set. The rich colors and creative
presentations will rival any of the diamonds in the display case.
Seagull Pewter - for traditionally wrought pewter.
Outside of Ocho Rios are several studios where you can visit
with the artists, as well as view their paintings, sculpture, carvings and ceramic work:
Wassi Art - Southeast of Ocho Rios on the road to Kingston, before you enter Fern Gully, look for a retaining wall on the
left painted with the name Wassi Art. Take the unpaved road (called Back Street)
toward Great Pond and you'll enter a world of fanciful but functional pottery created by a group of young,
Harmony Hall - One of the best art galleries in Jamaica is located in ,
a graciously restored stone-and-wood Victorian mansion on the coast road east of Ocho Rios.
The works of contemporary local artists -- Kapo, David Boxer, Everald Brown and Judy MacMillan --
are on display in the manse, which was built in 1886 as part of a pimento estate.
